Self-Care for Parents, Carers and Children | Mental Health & Wellbeing

Self-care plays an important role in supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing for both adults and children. It is not always about taking large amounts of time away or making big lifestyle changes. More often, it is found in small, everyday moments that help us pause, reset, and reconnect.

Self-care for parents and carers

For parents and carers, daily life can feel busy and emotionally demanding. Self-care can be simple and realistic, such as taking a moment to breathe, listening to music, going for a walk, reflecting on the day, or connecting with others.

These small moments help support emotional regulation, reduce stress, and build resilience over time.

Self-care for children

For children, self-care is often experienced through play, creativity, and connection. This may include drawing, reading, spending quiet time, listening to music, baking, or playing games.

These activities help children express emotions, feel safe, and develop healthy coping strategies in everyday life.

The importance of connection

Connection is at the heart of wellbeing. Sharing time together, talking about the day, and being present with one another can be deeply supportive for both children and adults.

Self-care does not need to be perfect or complicated. It is about small, consistent moments of comfort, care, and connection that support emotional wellbeing over time.

At Ray of Light, we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of children, young people, parents, and carers through a compassionate, trauma-informed approach.
